Bedford, Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania was on our path for one important reason…Saltwater Slide at Weekend at Wolfie’s! WAW was a ska punk music festival out on a ranch where everyone camped for the weekend. We actually stayed down the road in Bedford at a camp called Friendship Village so we could hook up to water and electric for the week. On our way to Pennsylvania we met Jeffs long time friend Erik Bell and his girlfriend Jessica at Cacapon State Park for a quick visit to catch up. We hope to hang out with them again on our way back through the area.
While in Bedford we discovered Shawnee State Park for day of hiking. It had huge mountains and many lakes. This was a gorgeous park to get our daily exercise in for sure. The downtown of Bedford was very old and charming with a German flare in the architecture. We had breakfast one morning at a cute little restaurant called Birds Nest Farm Cafe.
Our dear friends of Saltwater Slide drove a band van from San Antonio, Texas all the way straight through to the festival in Pennsylvania in about 26 hours. This SWS tribe is one cool bunch! They were the opening act for the festival at 6pm on Thursday night and they got the party started in style! When we arrived at the festival that afternoon the rain came down hard! Brock located a quick shade tent and we piled people underneath to wait out the storm. This was a fun festival start to the weekend and the sun was sure to come out just in time for the band to set up!
We took a day to venture out and see the 9/11 Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA. The memorial was so profound and moving as it displayed the original flight pattern of the crash with beautiful stone and also had a wall honoring all of the passengers from the flight. One of the flight attendants mothers was there to place a dozen yellow roses on her daughters site. You could still feel the devastation of the event like it happened yesterday.
When we left the memorial we need to hike it off so we headed up to Wolf Rock with the pups.
The last day in Pennsylvania we had dinner at a historic landmark called Jean Bonnet Tavern established in 1760. The restaurant is a historic stone structure with exposed beams in the ceiling still strong with charm and surrounded by vegetable gardens and livestock that you could feed. Jeff ordered a mushroom Swiss burger and I had the Bonnet French dip sandwich accompanied by a couple cold beers. This place was a treat! A great way to wrap up our time in PA!
