Summer in Vermont

Our campsite in Vermont.

Oh the cool mountain breeze, temps just 70 degrees, we think this might be the place to be in July! It was a very scenic mountain drive to get to our camp in Woodford, VT right outside the town of Bennington. The Love Bus got a little heated coming up that last mountain but she made it thank goodness! We are situated in the Green Mountain Forest and oh they are green! The mountains are covered in a variety of pine and maple trees and the lower forest floor is layered in fern and wildflowers with ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams throughout. Our camp is called Greenwood Lodge and Campsites. The owners Ed and Ann are very welcoming, as you check in at their house they offer you books to read or check out and they gave us brochures on the area and said we could use their canoes if we’d like to paddle around one of the lakes on the property . The Love Bus parked right on top of a mountain overlooking a lake. This sure feels like home! There were lots of beautiful trails up mountains and through the wood on the property that we hiked with the dogs. There was even an area where the pups could play and swim off leash!

Our first venture out of the campground was to hike Woodford State Park! Beautiful! This hike was around a huge lake so you had water views pretty much the whole way. Next we headed into Green Mountain National Forest and practically got lost but we didn’t mind a bit.

In the days following we saw beautiful sunrises and sunsets, we ventured into the charming little town of Bennington where we stopped at Henry’s (a local meat, vegetable, and maple syrup market) to pick up some fresh local fixins. Along the way we saw some quaint covered bridges and some local history.

One day we took a drive up to a working farm in Merck Forest. The setting was rolling hills of wild blueberries, a maple syrup factory, goats, lamb, sheep and chickens with hiking trails up mountains weaved throughout.

The following day we hiked a section of the Appalachan Trail that went straight up the side of a Mountain. This was a challenging hike but well worth the views at the top. We saw a lot of through hikers along this hike.

Spent an afternoon in Manchester, Vermont. This is a town with white church steeples, local breweries, fantastic restaurants, dynamite art galleries and a quaint downtown that just hugs you in. After a good hike we stopped in Union Underground for some brews literally underground and then walked around to the little shops that welcomed dogs with treats and water. Then on to a pizza joint where we sat on the patio watching the town go by as we enjoyed our pie. Our last stop of the day was at The Crooked Ram. They served local craft beer and wines by the glass. This was a great way to conclude our time in Vermont. We will definitely be coming back!!
