Exploring Maryland
We are camping on the Potomac River for a month, close to the Appalachian Trail. This month Jeff has a couple of business trips that he will need to fly to and hopefully towards the end of our stay he can take some vacation time so we can go kayak down this beautiful river! The pups and I will do some hiking and swimming every day. If I haven’t mentioned so far my favorite app for hiking is called All Trails. It finds my location and gives me all the hikes around me with ratings and reviews. The first trail I found was called Virginius Island Trail. It was a loop that ran along the river and through the town of Harpers Ferry along side the Appalachian trail.
Our first free weekend we took a peaceful and relaxed kayak trip down the Potomac River. It was an overcast day and the water was very calm.
After a relaxing day it’s time for Jeff to kick my butt on the Maryland Heights Loop. Talk about a mountain…Jeff thought it would be fun for us to do the long version since we needed the exercise. Wow! It was hard but the VIEWS were definitely worth it!! Towards the end of the hike our friend Jeremy Dolphin just happened to RUN by (on the same mountain I was struggling just hiking). After we all got off the mountain we met for a swim in the river down below. The pups loved this treat!
Jeff took a business trip to Akron, Ohio for a few days while the pups and I held down camp. I joined a delightful yoga studio called Roots and River Yoga that was across the train tracks and only a mile from camp. I met some wonderful people and enjoyed practicing with them for the month that we were in the area. When Jeff returned we hiked the Weverton Cliffs which is a section of the Appalachian Trail. We spent the day on the trail going as far as we could and then turning around. We got the privilege of talking to some through hikers, one who’s trail name was “Noname”. Ha! They all had interesting stories and were so delightful to talk with. The pups spotted a really pretty turtle on the trail too. Bonus!
Our next adventure was to the town of Winchester where Jeff lived for ten years before he moved to Texas. We caught up with a bunch of really cool friends as we strolled through Old Town Winchester walking mall.
Spent a day in the historic town of Harpers Ferry touring the old buildings and having lunch.
We stopped at Harpers Ferry Brewing Company on the way back to camp. Once again we had absolutely amazing views!! The views were so gorgeous we didn’t even have a beer. Ha! We were really too tired. We went back another day with our dear friends Erik and Jessica to sample the brews and they were yummy!
Our sweet friends Joey and Katherine Blake had us over to their house for dinner one evening . It was great to catch up with our friends and there precious children.
We had to bring the Love Bus into Winchester to check on an oil leak so Jeff took me to breakfast at a cute little dive called Bonnie Blue while the bus was being worked on. We devoured some southern style deliciousness for sure!
We did a few more beautiful hikes and then took a trip to Annapolis to visit Jeffs family. His cousin Geoff and his wife Emily hosted us all for a crab boil and BBQ. It was Jeffs Aunt Susan Ennis’ birthday and Momma Betty Sue made the trip from Virginia to be with us too! What a joyful day of celebration had by all.
Our last and final outing of this trip was taking the train into Washington DC. What an amazing city our nation’s capital is! We walked all through National Mall , by the Washington Monument , along side the reflecting pool to the Lincoln Memorial. Then we made our way over to the White House! Afterwards, we made a quick stop at Dupont Circle and grabbed a pizza and drinks at City Tap House. I’d say this stop on our Love Bus tour was a success!
We are delighted that you chose to visit Maryland and Washington DC. It was great seeing you both and have so enjoyed your beautiful photos. Can’t wait to see what’s next in your travels!
