Rollin’ Through Connecticut
July and August in Connecticut was pretty mild with highs in the 80’s and lows in the 60’s at night. Our camp was centrally located to great hikes and the beautiful coast. We started our time with a stop at a local brewery of course.
We did some beautiful hikes and some HOT muggy hikes. The trees were huge and we saw lakes, rivers and steams galore. This time of year its best to start early and wear bug spray. This was the most mosquitos we’ve seen on this trip so far.
We headed to the coastal region of Connecticut for the weekend stopping In Essex, Centerbrook, Old Saybrook and Mystic. These old ship towns were established as early as the 1700’s so there is a lot of quaint historic buildings lining the towns. I think our favorite was Mystic where we watched the boats coming and going as the town was buzzing with happy people.
We saw the set for the movie from the 80’s Mystic Pizza while we were in Mystic but didn’t eat because we were told you must try the clam pizza from Frank Pepe’s so we did. The restaurant had a line out the door for the uniquely delicious pie. Its a must try when you’re up this way!
We love to follow live music everywhere we go and we heard about the Podunk Bluegrass Music Festival in Goshen, CT. It was so fun! These bands really brought you back to an earlier time in history. The music reminded me of the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou. It was a breezy 70 degree day of fiddles, banjos, stand up base and guitars. The strings were just singing in the breeze.
Our last “find” in Connecticut happened on our way home from the concert. We happened by this restaurant called Bohemian Pizza and just had to stop in. In the parking lot were motorcycles, cars with surfboards on top and a few classic cars. Apparently only groovy people eat here. When we walked in the walls were covered with old record album covers. There were huge fish tanks throughout and on the table were trivial pursuit game cards to play while you wait. The vibe was very hippy and the pizza was outstanding! Great way to conclude this stop.
